Onward and Upward

Onward and Upward

The Committee on Continuing Medical Education has gone through experiences worthy of leaps and bounds over the last three years.  The pride of the Committee during this time was the development of the In-Service Examination for the Nephrology Fellows-in-Training.  This was borne out of the desire of the Society to better prepare the Fellows for private practice by enhancing their theoretical knowledge.  It was the hope of the Committee Members that the In-service examination will prime the Fellows for their Nephrology Board Examination.

The first In-Service Examination was held during 2014 in a written format.  The Committee underwent a test construction seminar held my Dr. Nenita Collantes.  Questions were constructed by the Committee Members and were critiqued by each other.  Upon completion, the test was conducted simultaneously among different testing centers that year.

To push the challenge further, the committee also boasts of facilitating the second In-Service Training Examination last 2015.  Aiming to help the environment in their own little way, the committee was able to administer the examination in a paperless and fully electronic fashion.  This computerized examination was constructed by the committee in a span of three months.  It was delivered simultaneously for all fellows in four testing sites.  Results were out very quickly.

Because of the success of the paperless exam last year, the Committee decided to pursue this electronic examination which was held in four simultaneous testing centers: University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital, Chinese General Hospital, St. Luke’s Medical Center and Chiong Hua Hospital.  The examination was held last January 23, 2016 and lasted for a half day.   There were a total of 70 examinees: 34 first year fellows (passing rate of 38%); 33 second year fellows (passing rate of 27%); and three board eligible nephrologists (passing rate of 33%).

The Committee would like to congratulate the Top 5 among the first year fellows: Alpuerto, Michelle (MMC); Quimbo-Chu, Abigail (CHH); Austria, Nickson (UP-PGH); Ng, Camille (NKTI); Lu, Wendoyn (NKTI).  The Top 5 among the second year fellows and board eligible nephrologists are as follows: Herceda, Aileen (UST); Bautista, Amerigo Jr. (NKTI); Zapanta, Jan (UP-PGH); Ramos, Dezi (VMMC); Gonzales, Karen (Board eligible).

The Continuing Medical Education Committee is led by Dr. Anne Margaret Ang.   Our very consistent and dedicated adviser is Dr. Nenita Collantes.  The Chair of the Information Technology Committee and the Computer Mastermind who was encoded the examination questions is Dr. William Gregory Rivero.  Members of the  Western Visayas Chapter who conducted the examination in Cebu were Dr. Gerry Mayo and Dr. Karen Licuanan. Devoted Committee Members include Dr. Maria Kristina Alolod, Dr. Tyrone Coseip, Dr. Paul Joseph Galutira, Dr. Rachelle Reyleigh Geronimo-Duruin, Dr. Ivy Kathryn Ilagan, Dr. Marissa Elizabeth Lim and  Dr. Jehan Jill Llave

The Committee hopes to invite more members.  They desire to continue at the forefront of expanding knowledge.
